USU CHAPTER HOSTS 'FIGHT NIGHT'
comments

Utah State University Fight the New Drug Chapter, or as they are more commonly known as, “Aggie Fighters” hit another homerun in Logan, Utah on November 3, 2011. In effort to do what Fighters do best, educate on the harmful effects of pornography, the Aggie’s hosted the first annual “Fight Night”.

The Utah State University Chapter is currently being run by Lynn Walker who is a

passionate Fighter and a dedicated volunteer to Fight the New Drug. Last year Lynn felt that the school and students needed a formal Chapter organized on campus. Being the initiator that Lynn is, he forged his way into the unknown and jumped through the hoops of the administrative system to become a legitimate and formal school Chapter.

When the school year began the Chapter wanted to do more than just pass out flyers and candy at campus events, they wanted to introduce themselves to the school and community and make a lasting impact. By partnering up with guest speaker, Cache County Attorney General, James Swink they put together an evening to present their powerful message. Walker started the evening by being open and candid about his personal experience with pornography. He set the stage to present an open, non judging atmosphere. Other members of the Chapter then presented the scientific facts concerning brain chemistry and its relationship with addiction. Several statistics involving the prevalence of pornography in our society (specifically Utah) were shown and the crowd was audibly shocked. The importance of education was sinking into the audience’s mind as they recognized the seriousness of pornography.

When James Swink, Cache County Attorney General, took the stage he offered a sobering perspective on pornography and the devastating connection it has with criminal behavior. He shared his professional experiences and warned that pornography addictions and drugs had similar consequences that often lead people behind bars.

The Aggie Fighters accomplished what they set out to do, make a lasting impression. They were in the newspaper the next day and they have been approached by the school to consider making them a part of the school’s official student services, which would give them both permanence and funding from the school.

The Utah State University Chapter has shown that fighters anywhere can and do make a difference.
