A few weeks ago we got this message on Facebook, we don’t always share these posts, but some stories need to be heard. The Facebook Fighter wrote: "Pornography was the biggest mistake of my life. I regret it more than anything. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and stay away from it. I would rather have thrown my computer out a window and smashed it into pieces.
Our movement has one main goal: to educate young people about the harmful effects of pornography. The campaign’s mission has always been focused on spreading awareness. As we have pursued our purpose we have had some pretty cool experiences, but it seemed like we kept hearing the same story over and over again. Young people coming up to us, calling, emailing, “I am already caught up in this, I need help.”The seed of FORTIFY took root. Now after nearly two years of research we are proud to announce the book is available now, with the FREE online program coming soon.
Man, why do I fight? While thinking about this I just didn’t know where to begin. It’s kind of like trying to figure out where a circle starts. You could say I’ve always danced to the beat of my own drum. And when I was very young I developed a reputation for being a Fighter of sorts. Not too long ago my older sister who has a crazy good memory was reminding me about what I was like when I was a kid. She said, “You were such a head-strong kid, and you were always in your own world.” I guess you could say that now I’m just the more grown up version of that. So what does that mean?
The secretive nature of pornography use can often leave those who view it with feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, shame, and self-doubt, especially when it has already turned into an addiction (Stuart & Szymanski, 2012). Where can we find hope when we feel buried by our secrets or shame? I don’t know why, but when I look for hope, springtime comes to mind. (Shout out to Mother Nature for it being springtime outside right now!!) I think I see hope in the spring because people come out of their winter cocoons, the trees and flowers bloom, the sun warms up and it feels like a great time to start over.
